Greg Erf and Robert Hirsch first met in 1988 on the
high plains of eastern New Mexico and West Texas. At the time Robert
Hirsch was teaching photography at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas
and Greg Erf was teaching photography at Eastern New Mexico University
in Portales, New Mexico, where he still works and resides.
Their collaboration began as professional courtesy in a series of exhibitions
and visiting lectures at each other's institution because that was the
way you generally operated in the isolation of the Southwest between
colleagues. Being only a hundred miles a part Erf and Hirsch discovered
many similarities between their teaching styles and photographic styles
that began this 12 year collaboration.
The proliferation of the internet and Hirsch's move to Buffalo, New
York became the motivation to create new kinds of collaborations. Their
interest in photography and teaching became the motivation to develop
an online course together. Erf's interest in photography and distance
education along with Hirsch's interest in photography and writing became
the core to creating a successful online history of photography course.
The successful design and deployment of their online course centered
around writing which led them to become collaborative columnists for
Photovision magazine. This column titled In Our Opinion can be seen
regularly as both these artists, photographers and educators explore
photography in our contemporary society with the written word. Visit
